Project Lifesaver
Using Technology to Locate Missing Loved Ones
Sponsoring Member: Sgt. Kirk Star
Project Lifesaver is a program designed to assist in locating missing persons who wander and become lost due to cognitive disabilities, for example seniors with Alzheimer’s and related dementia and children and teens with Autism or Down’s syndrome. Project Lifesaver is the creative use of technology employing electronic tracking systems to locate wander prone citizens. It is the only public safety program in North America that uses electronic tracking technology to locate at risk individuals. This program has proven to save lives and enables those conducting the search to save time, money and staffing.
Under the control of Sgt. Star of the VPD Missing Persons Unit and the Director of Operations in BC for Project Lifesaver, the VPD will participate in a three-month pilot project to test the use of the program’s ability to locate a sample target group.
