What is a Ride-Along?
A Ride-Along highlights the challenges and complexities that are faced daily by members of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and provide awareness of the VPD role to the public.
Rules & Regulations
Sponsor is the Vancouver Police Foundation, 2120 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 4N6 (“Sponsor” or “VPF”). The VPF is a registered charitable organization (BN 89022-6178-RR0001) as well as a non-profit Society, working in partnership with the Vancouver Police Department (“VPD”).
2. THE CONTEST PERIOD
The hashtag photo contest #VPDPARTNERS (“Contest”) begins on June 15, 2015 at 01:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time and ends on August 30, 2015 at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. Contest entries received outside of this time frame will be automatically disqualified.
Contest is open only to residents of British Columbia who are 19 years of age or older at the time of entry. Employees of the Vancouver Police Foundation and the Vancouver Police Department, its directors, affiliates, advertising and promotional agencies, immediate family members (defined as spouse, child, sibling, parent or grandparent), and members of the households (whether related or not) of any of the above are NOT eligible to win the Contest. By entering the Contest, entrants agree to waive any and all claims against VPF and/or VPD for personal injury, damage or loss of any kind which may result from participation in the Contest or from the receipt, enjoyment, or use of the prize.
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. INTERNET ACCESS IS REQUIRED TO ENTER. THE CONTEST IS OFFERED ONLY TO THE RESIDENTS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA.
One (1) Prize Winner of the Contest will have the opportunity to join VPD officers for one (1) Ride-Along Experience (“Prize”) to gain insight, knowledge and understanding of the role and practices of police officers. A Ride-Along also highlights the challenges and complexities that are faced daily by members of the Vancouver Police Department and provide awareness of the VPD role to the public. The Ride Along will be for one (1) time, one (1) VPD shift experience only, and will not exceed six (6) hours in total. Insurance, any personal travel expenses and any fees or costs associated with the prize are the sole responsibility of the Winner.
No cash or other prize substitution permitted except at Sponsor’s discretion. The prize is nontransferable. At its sole discretion, the VPD may disqualify any entrant from a Contest and/or refuse to award the Ride-Along.
5. RULES REGARDING PHOTOS
5.1. Photographs must have the VPF Police Sunglasses visibly shown and be taken in British Columbia.
5.2. The photograph must not contain sexually explicit or suggestive, obscene, lewd, violent, defamatory, political, personal and/or religious references or statements or objectionable and/or inappropriate content. Images must be in line with the mission and values of the VPF and VPD outlined at www.vancouverpolicefoundation.org and www.vpd.ca.
5.3. If a photograph contains minors (under the age of majority in the Province of British Columbia) the entrant must have the consent of the minor’s parents or legal guardian.
6. HOW TO ENTER
6.1. No purchase is necessary to enter or win.
6.2. Entries must be digital photographs and submitted electronically. Please refer to 6.3 for further details on format of photograph.
6.3. To enter the Contest,
6.3.1. Login to your Facebook, Instagram or Twitter account. If you do not have an account, you can sign up for free. Use the hashtag #VPDPARTNERS, follow online instructions to complete and upload a photograph.
6.3.2. Participants will be granted one more entry and increase their chance of winning by registering as a Member of the Vancouver Police Foundation at www.vancouverpolicefoundation.org. You are required to complete an entry form, prior to completing your registration.
6.4. Limit one entry per person/email address. Participants may enter the Contest under one name and one email address only. In the event of a dispute as to entries submitted by multiple individuals using the same email account, entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized subscriber of the email account used to enter the Contest at the actual time of entry. The authorized email account subscriber is deemed to be the natural person who is assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, on-line service provider or other organization which is responsible for assigning email addresses or the domain associated with the submitted email address. An eligible individual receives one automatic entry into the Contest when he/she submits the requested information.
6.5. Entries generated by script, macro, robotic, programmed, or any other automated means are prohibited and will be disqualified.
6.6. The email address submitted must be valid from 01:00 a.m. on June 17, 2015 Pacific Standard Time until 12:00 a.m. August 30, 2015 Pacific Standard Time.
6.7. Photographs will be reviewed by the Group Moderator before it will appear on the public group page. Depending on how many images the Sponsor receives, process may take a few days.
6.8. Submission constitutes Entrant’s certification that the entry is their own original work and does not infringe the intellectual property or proprietary rights of any third party, including, without limitation, any third party patents, copyrights or trademarks (“IP Rights”). Entrant hereby agrees not to instigate, support, maintain or authorize any action, claim or lawsuit against the Sponsor, or any other person, on the grounds that any use of the entry as provided herein, infringes any of entrant’s rights as creator of the entry, including, without limitation, trademark rights, copyrights and moral rights or “droit moral.”
6.9. All entries and photographs become the property of Sponsor. Submission of entry grants Sponsor an exclusive right and license in perpetuity to reproduce, publish, display, and use any submitted entry for promotional or demonstrative purposes on any Sponsor and/or VPD web properties. In no way is Entrant to be construed as the agent of or to be acting as the agent of Sponsors in any way. Nothing herein shall constitute an employment, joint venture, or partnership relationship between Entrant and Sponsor.
7. SELECTION OF WINNER
7.1. The winner will be selected by the Vancouver Police Foundation and the Vancouver Police Department group of judges who will be selecting the winning photo. The entries will be judged on the following criteria: creativity, originality, quality, popularity/likes on social media channels, and how the entry has incorporated elements from the VPF Awareness Campaign. All decisions made by the judges are final.
7.2. The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.
7.3. Contest winner will be chosen on or about September 5, 2015.The potential winner will be notified by e-mail address provided upon entry, within five (5) business days of the drawing. Sponsor is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected, or unsuccessful efforts to notify potential winner.
7.4. The potential winner will be required to claim the prize, sign and return an affidavit of eligibility, release of liability, background check and publicity consent and release agreement, all within ten (10) business days of notification or attempted notification. If the winner has not attained the age of 19 in the Province of British Columbia by the end of the Consent Period, prize will be awarded in name of parent or guardian.
7.5. If the selected winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, fails to claim the prize within ten (10) business days from the time award notification was sent, or fails to timely return a completed and executed declaration and releases as required, prize may be forfeited and an alternate winner selected.
7.6. Contest winner will be announced to the public once the prize has been claimed and all required documentation is completed by VPD.
7.7. By accepting and/or using prize, winner consents to the use of his/her name, voice and/or likeness for the purpose of public relations or promotion without further compensation and upon request will provide such consent in writing.
The receipt by winner of the prize offered in this Contest is conditioned upon compliance with any and all provincial laws and regulations. ANY VIOLATION OF THESE OFFICIAL RULES BY ANY WINNER (AT SPONSOR’S SOLE DISCRETION) WILL RESULT IN SUCH WINNER’S DISQUALIFICATION AS WINNER OF THE CONTEST AND ALL PRIVILEGES AS WINNER WILL BE IMMEDIATELY TERMINATED.
8. VANCOUVER POLICE DEPARTMENT: RIDE-ALONG PROCEDURE
8.1. Contest Winner (“Candidate”) for a Ride-Along shall be considered when they are notified by a representative of the Contest Sponsor that they have been selected the winner of the contest and be at least 16 years of age.
8.2. A criminal background check will be completed by the Vancouver Police Departmental Security Officer and Departmental Security Officer, or designate, shall authorize the Ride-Along Form (“VPD 24”) which indicate the background check is complete.
8.3. The Inspector in care of the District or Section shall at his or her discretion, approve all Ride-Along forms and then forward the VPD 24 to the appropriate Non Commissioned Officer (NCO). The NCO shall ensure that arrangements are made for the issue of appropriate visitor identification to the approved ride-along for the duration of the shift.
8.4. The Supervisor shall:
8.4.1. Ensure the candidate is advised concerning the ride-along;
8.4.2. Ensure the Waiver of Liability on the VPD 24 is completed;
8.4.3. Witness the signature of the ride-along candidate prior to the commencement of the tour of duty;
8.4.4. Make a copy of the completed VPD 24 and place the copy in the section or team’s Ride-Along file; and
8.4.5. Submit the completed original VPD 24 to the Executive Assistant, Operations Divisions, at the completion of the ride along.
8.5. Members (Vancouver Police Officers) shall take reasonable steps to avoid exposing Ride-Along to hazardous situations. In cases where members must attend an obviously hazardous situation they shall take reasonable steps to ensure the ride-along candidate remains in a position of relative safety, as determined by the officer.
8.6. The ride-along participant has an observer status only and is not to perform any police function unless otherwise direct by the member.
8.7. IN ALL INSTANCES RIDE-ALONGS ARE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE VANCOUVER POLICE.
9. GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
By entering, each participant agrees (a) to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor, which shall be final, and (b) that Sponsor, agents and representatives of Sponsor, its parent organizations, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, legal advisors and advertising, promotion, fulfilment agencies are not responsible for and shall not be liable for: (i) late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible, postage-due entries, mail, or e-mail; (ii) telephone, electronic, hardware or software program, network, Internet, or computer malfunctions, failures, or difficulties of any kind; (iii) failed, incomplete, garbled, or delayed computer transmissions; (iv) any condition caused by events beyond the control of the Sponsor that may cause the Contest to be disrupted or corrupted; (v) any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising in connection with or as a result of the prize, or acceptance, possession, or use of the prize, or from participation in the Contest including without limitation, personal injury, death, and property damage, and claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy; or (vi) any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the Contest. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, suspend, or cancel the Contest at any time if the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security, or proper play of the Contest. Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual or entity it finds to be attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with the Contest.
10. RELEASE AND LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY; INDEMNIFICATION
By participating in the Contest, entrants agree to release and hold harmless the Sponsor and their officers, directors, employees, and agents (the “Released Parties”) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Contest or receipt or use of the prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Contest; (b) technical errors related to computers, servers, providers, or telephone or network lines; (c) printing errors; (d) errors in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries; or (e) injury (including death) or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant’s participation in the Contest or receipt of the prize. Entrant further agrees that in any cause of action, the Released Parties’ liability will be limited to the cost of entering and participating in the Contest, and in no event shall the Released Parties be liable for attorney’s fees. Entrant waives the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages. Entrant further agrees to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all third party claims or causes of action arising out of or in any way related to the Contests, including, without limitation, any claims of infringement of IP Rights.
Information collected from Entrants will only be used for the purpose of selecting and notifying winners, and will not be re-used, sold or shared in any manner by Sponsor or any third parties, unless an entrant has agreed to receive emails from Sponsors.
