VPD Officers are Empowering Vancouver’s Kids & Teens Through Sport

The Vancouver Police Foundation is proud to support 15 youth-focused sports and recreation programs that use physical activity as a powerful tool to build trust, encourage healthy lifestyles, and strengthen connections between police officers and young people. Every single one of these programs is developed and led by dedicated VPD officers who volunteer their time to go above and beyond for Vancouver kids and teens.

These programs do more than teach athletic skills — they create lasting relationships, provide positive mentorship, and foster a sense of belonging for youth across Vancouver. From basketball and rugby to swimming and archery, these initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to community engagement through sport.

In the heart of Strathcona, three impactful programs are helping youth stay active and connected. Bike Smart offers free bike safety gear and training to local children, focusing on safe cycling habits. Strathcona SPARK, launched in 2023, brings sports and games to students at Strathcona Elementary, pairing fun with mentorship from officers and volunteers. Floor Hockey for Kids, in partnership with Hastings Community Centre, gives at-risk youth the chance to participate in a free, supportive team sport environment alongside VPD members.

Terry Parmar created floor hockey for kids nearly five years ago to give children an opportunity they may not otherwise have.

“Thanks to the VPF, we are able to connect deserving kids with a fun and active opportunity in their community,” explains Parmar. “I started this program to help integrate low income and first-generation Canadians into an activity that is a huge part of the local, Canadian experience. It creates a feeling of inclusivity around having access to learning the game of hockey.”

Team sports continue to be a standout way for youth to engage with each other and with mentors in a positive setting. Programs like Full Court Press, PAL Rugby, and the VPD Soccer Club use the universal language of basketball, rugby, and soccer to break down barriers and build confidence and trust. The Van Tech Youth Boxing Club and Iron Bulldogs Health Club offer fitness-focused programs designed to help youth develop strength, self-esteem, and meaningful relationships with their peers and mentors.

Other programs offer unique athletic experiences tailored to help youth overcome challenges and discover new passions. Titans Swim Club, led by a certified officer-instructor, empowers students to overcome uncertainty in the water and grow their confidence. The VPD Archery Club, newly funded this year, introduces young people to the discipline and focus of archery. The longstanding VPD Running Club teaches goal-setting, perseverance, and the rewards of hard work, culminating in a destination marathon.

“The VPD Running Club became a safe place for me,” says Amanda Tom of Windermere Secondary. “It was incredibly welcoming and everyone was always friendly. Though this club promoted physical health, it also provided countless opportunities for personal growth. I became more comfortable talking to new people and began to branch out.”

For youth with an interest in golf, the VPD Golf Club provides opportunities to build skills and mentorship connections, while participating in community events like the Musqueam fundraiser and VPD Golf Academy.

Gang Tackle and Turning Point, a powerful anti-gang program, uses spring football and fall tours of the Downtown Eastside — capped off with a BC Lions game — to educate and inspire youth to make positive life choices. And the VPD D.R.E.A.M. Hockey Ball Classic brings over 240 students together with officers, first responders, and Canucks alumni for a day of friendly competition, teamwork, and fun.

These 15 programs are a testament to the VPD and VPF’s belief in the unifying, life-changing power of sport. By supporting these athletic initiatives, we’re helping create healthier, safer communities — one game, goal, and positive interaction at a time.
