Investing in better outcomes. Every year, the Foundation works with the VPD to identify projects, programs and equipment that can meaningfully improve public safety, officer safety, or operational effectiveness.
Some investments enhance training and preparedness. Some introduce new technology. Others provide an entirely new capability or allow officers to respond differently to an emerging challenge. Public safety needs continue to evolve. Technology advances. New risks emerge. Frontline officers identify gaps and opportunities that could not have been anticipated years, or sometimes even months, earlier. For that reason, the need for innovation is never static, and the list of opportunities never ends.
The next transformative opportunity may be a new piece of technology, specialized training, protective equipment, critical infrastructure, or a program developed in response to an emerging community need.
It may be identified by an officer who sees a recurring risk on the front line. It may arise from an advance in technology that makes a safer response possible. Or it may become urgent because the nature of crime and public safety has changed. The Foundation must be ready to respond when those opportunities emerge. Flexible philanthropic support allows the Vancouver Police Foundation to fund promising ideas, act on urgent needs, and help the VPD pursue solutions that could not otherwise move forward.
