At the Vancouver Police Foundation, we are always inspired by the incredible dedication of VPD’s Police Service Dogs and their handlers. Police Service Dogs Jade and Mando have both retired after exceptional careers protecting Vancouver.

PSD Jade: A Hero’s Retirement
After five years of exceptional service, PSD Jade has retired following Sgt. Jesse Schellenberg’s promotion and transfer out of the Canine Unit. This dedicated duo worked tirelessly to protect Vancouver, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
Jade’s bravery was unmatched—she once took a gunshot to protect her partner, demonstrating extraordinary courage. A steadfast supporter of the VPF and recipient of the VPD Exemplary Service Award, Sgt. Schellenberg was always accompanied by Jade, whose charm and loyalty captured the hearts of everyone she met.
Now, as Sgt. Schellenberg steps into a new role, Jade is enjoying a well-earned retirement at home with the Schellenberg family, surrounded by love and comfort. While she may no longer wear the VPF-funded ballistic vest she once proudly donned, her legacy of service and joy will always be remembered.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sgt. Schellenberg for his dedication and wish him continued success in his new role.

PSD Mando: A Legacy of Service
In June 2021, Cst. Brian McGuinness partnered with PSD Mando, following in the footsteps of his father, Ret. Sgt. Gord McGuinness, a respected VPD dog handler and trainer. Mando’s natural tracking ability, composure, and exceptional sense of smell made him a vital asset in high-stakes situations. Unfortunately, due to a degenerative back issue, the difficult decision was made to retire him in January 2025.
True to his outstanding career, Mando’s final shift ended in heroism, successfully tracking and apprehending two suspects before stepping into a well-earned retirement. Now, he enjoys his golden years chasing bunnies and playing with his favourite toys while Brian prepares to welcome a new K9 partner.
We wish PSD Mando a well-earned, happy retirement and send our best to his handler, Cst. McGuinness, as he continues the proud McGuinness family legacy in the Canine Unit
