June 17, 2025 Proclaimed ‘Out On Patrol Day’ in City of Vancouver

Out On Patrol, a registered non-profit society based in British Columbia, is transforming the landscape for 2SLGBTQ+ law enforcement professionals — and for the communities they serve. Thanks to several key law enforcement leaders right here at the VPD, and with financial support from the Vancouver Police Foundation, Out On Patrol launched in 2020, creating a vital support network for queer and allied officers while also driving meaningful public engagement and outreach.

Earlier this week, its work was formally recognized by the City of Vancouver: Mayor Ken Sim has officially proclaimed June 17, 2025, as Out On Patrol Day — a proud milestone that speaks volumes about how far the organization has come.

Founded by a group of 2SLGBTQ+ law enforcement members who understood the need for connection, visibility, and peer support, Out On Patrol was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: that no one in policing should feel isolated or unsafe because of their identity. Since its inception, the society has grown into a trusted and trailblazing force within the law enforcement community and beyond.

A Mission of Support and Visibility

Out On Patrol exists to support and empower 2SLGBTQ+ law enforcement professionals, while building inclusive bridges between the policing community and the diverse populations they serve. With more than 300 members across Canada and internationally, the society is committed to ensuring that every officer — whether they are out or not — knows they are not alone.

A cornerstone of the organization is peer support. Out On Patrol provides a safe space where members can connect, share experiences, and navigate the unique challenges that come with being 2SLGBTQ+ in traditionally conservative or hierarchical work environments. The society respects that coming out is a deeply personal decision — and offers judgment-free support.

“Out On Patrol welcomes everyone, no matter what stage they are at in life,” explains VPD Constable Chris Birkett.  “A central tenet of the society is peer support… we provide a safe space.”

Chris was part of the founding team of law enforcement officers who launched Out On Patrol five years ago.

Real Impact in Just Five Years

In just half a decade, Out On Patrol has achieved measurable success and meaningful engagement:

  • More than 300 members have joined from around the world
  • Official endorsement from the BC Association of Chiefs of Police
  • Partnerships with 10 Pride organizations across the province
  • Speaking engagements at national and international conferences, including the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)

But the work doesn’t stop with officers. Out On Patrol’s Youth Outreach Series, supported by the Motorola Solutions Foundation, is helping build a stronger and more inclusive future for law enforcement. The program has:

  • Reached over 5,000 students
  • Distributed more than $55,000 in scholarships to 2SLGBTQ+ youth pursuing careers in policing or related fields

This outreach ensures the next generation of officers enters the profession with confidence, support, and the knowledge that they belong.

A Powerful Legacy, Past and Present

While Out On Patrol is focused on the future, it also acknowledges and honours the past. The society has become a touchstone for retired officers — some of whom never had the chance to be open about their identities while serving. Many of these individuals have since joined the society, sharing how transformative it is to finally be seen and supported. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder of the barriers that existed — and the ongoing importance of Out On Patrol’s work in dismantling them.

“Some members are more than 10 years into retirement and are joining Out On Patrol, telling us how impactful this organization is to them,” says Birkett. “They unknowingly paved the way.”

Out On Patrol Day: More Than a Milestone

The proclamation of Out On Patrol Day is more than symbolic recognition; it’s a celebration of visibility, courage, and progress. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure that all 2SLGBTQ+ law enforcement professionals feel respected and valued in their roles — and that the communities they serve know they are supported, too.

As the organization marks its fifth anniversary, the message is clear: all law enforcement personnel from around the world are welcome. Whether you’re a sworn or civilian member of law enforcement law enforcement volunteers, or a student of law enforcement — there is a place for you at Out On Patrol.
