The VPD Mounted Squad welcomed their newest edition to the team, three Percheron/Throughbred cross horses. They conducted their initial police training from a breeding facility in the southern United States and arrived at their new home, the VPD Mounted Unit stables, in early June. The three horses are currently named Jedi, Jarvis and Josiah and are affectionately referred to as the “J’s. They will be given their official police horse names later this year.
The new horses will have day-to-day duties that will include patrolling Stanley Park, the beaches on the West Side, and the downtown core. They also support the VPD by attending large-scale events such as parades and the Celebration of Lights that occurs every year at English Bay.
The Vancouver Police Foundation is currently raising funds for a new partial cover for the paddock and an opportunity exists for three special donors to this project to name a Police Horse*.
