The next K9 Hero is…?

It’s not every day that you have an opportunity to pick the next Police Dog!!

OK, so in this case, it’s actually the Vancouver Police Foundation’s next symbolic adoption of a VPD Police Service Dog (PSD), but your vote will make a difference!

The Vancouver Police Foundation is proud to support the VPD Canine Unit. Thanks to people like you, over $500,000 has been granted to provide our PSD heroes with essential life-saving tools and Canada’s most advanced training facility.

Since 1957, PSDs have been valuable members of the VPD team as they help fight crime and build safer communities. VPD’s Canine unit is, in fact, the oldest municipal police dog unit in Canada.

These PSDs are trained in a variety of disciplines such as tracking, criminal apprehension, evidence recovery, narcotics, firearms and explosives detection.

We launched a symbolic adoption program two years ago that allowed people to “adopt” one of VPD’s amazing K9 heroes. This year we want to recognize a few more amazing PSDs and just can’t choose!

Which one will you pick?

PSD Mando

Breed: German Shepherd
Sex: Male
Weight: 80 lbs.
Born: February 18, 2018
K-9 Certified: July 13, 2021

Mando is one of the newest members of the Canine Unit. He is a happy-go-lucky dog that loves catching bad guys and loves hanging out with his family at home, including his two human siblings. In fact, every time Mando enters the house he runs directly to the kids’ playroom to check on them and see what they are up to.

PSD Ghost

Breed: German Shepherd
Sex: Male
Weight: 70 lbs.
Born: May 11, 2019
K-9 Certified: December 22, 2020

Ghost was born in the Netherlands and came to Canada in 2020. Like all the other VPD canines, he truly enjoys going to work each day. A special skill Ghost has is his ability to run backwards! In fact, he can almost run the length of a soccer field completely backwards. He is also so toy-driven that Ghost will often pretend to go poop because he knows he will get playtime with his favourite toy as a reward for going to bathroom on command. On his days off, Ghost loves to play with his brother, retired police dog Brando.

PSD Joker

Breed: German Shepherd
Weight: 70 lbs.
Sex: Male
Born: July 20, 2019
K-9 Certified: June 28, 2021

Joker is also a recent addition to the Canine Unit. He is the perfect relaxed companion at home on his days off, but his favourite thing in the world is catching bad guys at work. When it comes to his favourite toy, is it no doubt his Kong. Joker never lets his Kong out of his sight. He sleeps with it, drops it in his water bowl before drinking and even brings it on walks.

PSD Vook

Breed: German Shepherd
Weight: 80 lbs.
Sex: Male
Born: June 8, 2018
K-9 Certified: January 15, 2020

Vook was born in Germany and raised in the USA. He truly loves coming to work. On his days off, Vook likes to swim at the lake and go on long walks with his family. Most nights Vook thinks he is being sneaky as he hides in the backyard when it’s bedtime – and then he pretends not to hear his handler calling for him to come to bed.

PSD Dak

Breed: German Shepherd
Sex: Male
Weight: 80 lbs.
Born: June 1, 2019
K-9 Certified: December 22, 2020

Dak loves using his nose at work and is always up for hard work …. but he also really loves to play with his toys. While at home Dak loves to play with his big dog sister – a Boxer – and take long naps on the dog hammocks. Between naps, his favourite outdoor activity is chasing and catching bees!

PSD Walker

Breed: German Shepherd
Weight: 80 lbs.
Sex: Male
Born: November 10, 2015
K-9 Certified: June 26, 2018

Walker was born in Slovakia and came to Canada in 2017. He is a hard worker and loves catching criminals. On his days off, Walker likes to run around in the sun, play fetch and go to the lake. When he arrives at the lake you’ll always see him carefully tip-toeing into the water before he fully commits for a swim. He also likes to watch TV and is aways sure to bark at all the four-legged friends he sees on the screen.
