The Vancouver Police Foundation is very sad to learn of the passing of one of our founding directors, Ron Cliff, CM, OBC, FCA, B.Comm.
Ron joined Arthur Phillips, Joseph Cohen, Senator Edward Lawson, Graham Dawson, John Davidson and Reverend Kenneth Wotherspoon in forming the Vancouver Police Foundation, North America’s second-oldest police foundation after NYPD. They came together as a small group of citizens that wanted to support the VPD. From these humble beginnings, the Foundation now has thousands of donors and in 2022, committed to $1.7 million to support over 130 VPD community-based programs to make Vancouver safer for all that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.
Ron remained an active member of the VPF Board until recently and we were so proud to have him as our Chair Emeritus, given all of his other community commitments. He continued to participate in board meetings and VPF events when he could and remained a generous donor every year.
In addition to his amazing work with the Vancouver Police Foundation, Ron also co-founded the Endeavour Society and supported the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, York House School, St. Georges, Pearson College, UBC, SFU, the VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Ron’s immense commitment to philanthropy and community set a high bar for those who continue to follow in his footsteps, but has also inspired so many to volunteer their time, expertise and financial donations to causes close to their heart.
While we are very sad about Ron’s passing, we are so grateful for his work in establishing the VPF and building such a strong foundation for us to build upon and upon which to honour his legacy.
Rest in peace Ron. To the surviving members of Ron’s family, we are so sorry for your loss and share with you the big hole he will leave in all of our lives.
