The VPD Cadet program is an innovative leadership building initiative for Vancouver youth in grades 10-12. Over 28 weeks, this program pushes cadets mentally and physically to bring out the best in themselves and their classmates; to build their confidence and leadership skills; and to increase their resiliency in the face of adversity.
The VPD Cadet program started in 2014 with seed funding from the Vancouver Police Foundation and its community partners, including the Peter and Joanne Brown Foundation, Beedie Development Group, Metrie and Thiessen Equipment, among others. The program has grown significantly in the past five years, now accommodating 100 students a year, with many more applicants. Led by active VPD members, Cadets are encouraged to participate in many community activities, including Remembrance Day ceremonies, the Santa Claus Parade, Lunar New Year and more. They receive support on their BC-curriculum homework, tips on how to develop a compelling résumé and are encouraged to public speak. The skills they learn in this program serve them well regardless of their career choices.
VPD Cadet Applications can be found on the VPD website or from school liaison officers and will close on May 31st. Applicants must be in Grade 9, 10 or 11 at a Vancouver school or reside in Vancouver. Apply here.
