It’s the start of the school year which also means the VPD Cadets program is ramping up for yet another exciting year filled with the eager recruits of Class 6 (2019/2020).
The VPD Cadets completed their recruiting campaign last June and selected 62 new Cadets to join the program, rounding out a total of 90 students this year. The latest Class is the most diverse group yet with students from different ethnic background such as: African Canadian, Caucasian, Chinese, Filipino, First Nations, South Asian, Middle Eastern and other ethnicities.
Over the course of 28 weeks, high school students in Grades 10-12 are mentored by active VPD members in the areas of leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, nutrition, community service, public speaking, communication, résumé building and more. The program takes place both indoors and outdoors and includes two camping weekends.
Cadets are encouraged to participate in various community activities throughout the year such as Remembrance Day, the Santa Claus Parade, Lunar New Year, and The Pulling Together Canoe Journey which is a powerful relationship-building event that brings together Indigenous youth and VPD members.
Best of luck to the VPD Cadets Class 6 and the new program year! We will keep you updated on their progress throughout the year.
